In a semiconductor industrial park in Taiwan, a 15-year-old high-tech factory building faced severe challenges with its concrete exterior walls: the original coating was chalking and fading, fine cracks had appeared on the concrete surface, and its protective performance was insufficient against salt and acid rain erosion in the coastal industrial zone. The client’s core requirements were to apply a coating during the shortest possible shutdown period that could withstand harsh environments, maintain protective performance for over ten years, and retain its color.
The project team selected Pentens NPU-12 as the final solution, where application techniques became the key to success:
Technique 1: Precise Pre-Treatment Diagnosis and Design
The team did not apply the coating directly. They first conducted a comprehensive substrate diagnosis, which revealed that the adhesion of the old coating was severely compromised. Therefore, the critical first step was using high-pressure water jetting to thoroughly remove all loose old paint, followed by “scarifying” the concrete to create a fresh, uniformly rough surface. This step ensured optimal physical adhesion for the subsequent coating, forming the foundation for long-term weathering resistance.
Technique 2: Systematic Application and Environmental Control
This project adopted a “sealer primer + NPU-12 topcoat” system. After the primer fully cured, the team strictly followed the product technical data sheet, mixing the base and hardener and adjusting the viscosity with a dedicated thinner to the optimal level for spraying. During application, temperature and humidity monitors were used on-site to strictly control the environment within 15-35°C and below 85% relative humidity. The team employed a cross-spray method to ensure uniform coverage of the first coat. After the standard recoat interval, the second coat was applied precisely, achieving the design requirement of a total dry film thickness exceeding 75 microns, thus forming a robust chemical protection layer.
Technique 3: Detail Handling and Finished Product Protection
For critical details prone to stress and water impact, such as wall corners and edges of expansion joints, the team pre-applied reinforcement coats by brush before the main spray application, ensuring adequate film build. After coating completion, a strict 48-hour curing period was enforced, with caution tape set up to avoid any impact or dust contamination.
Outcome Verification: The factory’s exterior walls have now maintained the coating for over five years, enduring dozens of typhoons and seasonal acid rain. The coating surface remains intact, without peeling, cracking, or significant loss of gloss, and the color is as uniform as new. This case confirms that the superior performance of NPU-12 can only be fully realized through three key techniques: “precise substrate preparation,” “systematic application control,” and “attention to detail.” This approach transforms theoretical weathering resistance into tangible, long-term asset protection.
